Of particular interest to fans of Gaither music, this collection invites all readers to fresh insights into the Christmas story and season. Not just another history of Christmas music, the text by Gloria Gaither tells both the biblical and personal stories behind each of the songs included in the text. We are challenged to reframe our idealized mental images of the night in Bethlehem to the reality of what must have been. A meditation and song entitled “It’s Not an Easy Thing to Bear the Son of God” takes us into the mind of Mary from Christmas night through Easter morn.

Gaither family traditions are described, and a particularly poignant devotion is “My Most Memorable Christmas,” one that followed a season of major changes not unlike those most families experience from time to time.

Artwork in blue and white adds to the book’s appeal, as does a section of Gaither family recipes. While this book is seasonal, it is not a quick, easy read, but rather one to be read with intention. Gaither draws from a variety of sources, weaving into both the musical texts and reflections, Scripture, history, and quotes to blend life’s realities with Christmas joy and hope. Includes CD. Recommended for church libraries and as a gift.
