God in the Raging Waters: Stories of Love and Service Following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita - Blom, Paul. Augsburg Fortress, 2006. 93p. $10.99, paperback. ISBN-10: 0-8066-5317-5. This unusual book tells how, in response to the unspeakable suffering in the aftermath of two hurricanes in 2005, people of
faith took up the task of repairing lives, rebuilding homes and other structures, and healing hearts. Paul Blom, bishop of the Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, has collected remarkable stories from survivors of the storms and their benefactors.
After the devastation, many congregations contributed significantly with money, supplies, and mission trips. Blom’s book is
a study in how local churches—and a major denomination—responded to a national disaster.
Particularly interesting is his discussion of how Gulf Coast area congregations coped when they were reduced in numbers due to the relocation of many members. Blom also writes of changes to consider—as well as ones already made—to allow a more prompt and effective response to the next disaster.
Following each of the five chapters, Blom provides several discussion questions, scriptural “reflection starters,” and action items—practical steps readers can take to be prepared for a time of suffering. These thoughtful extras make this slim book an ideal subject for a brief study by a Sunday school class or other small group.
