On Reading the Bible: Thoughts and Reflections of Over 500 Men and Women, from St. Augustine to Oprah Winfrey - Bradfield, Bill, ed. Dover, c2005. 196p. $6.95, Paperback. ISBN 0486437086.
This anthology of quotations on the Bible and Bible-reading draws from a remarkable variety of sources. Commentators one would expect—preachers, saints, Bible scholars—rub shoulders with improbable ones—Zsa Zsa Gabor, Oscar Wilde, W.C. Fields. Each has said or written something memorable about the Bible; Bradfield arranges these nuggets alphabetically by name of person quoted. The collection ends with 38 pages of helpful notes on some (but not all) of the sources.
A tiny sampling: “Scripture is a vast tapestry of God’s creating, saving, and blessing ways in this world.” (Eugene H. Peterson). Another, this one by W.J. Toms: “Be careful how you live. You may be the only Bible some person ever reads.”
On Reading the Bible is irresistible for browsing and would make a worthy addition to any congregational library as a tool for educators, pastors, and students of the Bible.
