Old Dog and the Christmas Wish - Davis, Christine. Lighthearted Press, 2006. Unp. $12.95, Hardcover (7 X 8.5), Hardcover. ISBN-10: 0-9659225-3-7.
[Juvenile fiction] Christmas—Fiction. Animals—Fiction. Dogs—Fiction
Anyone who has loved a dog, who finds meaning in Christmas, or who has a heart will be touched by this story. As Christmas nears, a tired old dog, neglected and chained to a fence, sees that his place is watching over the infant Jesus. With the help of a Christmas angel, the old dog comes to a peaceful end, knowing the joy of being where he is needed. This story, lovingly told and illustrated by Oregon artist Christine Davis, will move children and grownups alike. Perfect for reading to any young children, but especially those who have suffered the loss of a pet. A beautiful book, worthy of a place in any church library.
Davis’s previous two books, For Every Cat an Angel and For Every Dog an Angel (also from Lighthearted Press) will charm readers, young or old, who have loved a dog or a cat and will comfort those who grieve for pets who have died. Davis writes of “forever” dogs and cats, of guardian angels, and of angel bridges to connect us even when we’re separated by distance or death. Small in size (5.25 X 6.75”) but not too small for a church or synagogue library shelf, these would also make lovely gifts for anyone welcoming a new pet or parting with an old one.
