God in the Flesh: What Speechless Lawyers, Kneeling Soldiers and Shocked Crowds Teach Us About Jesus - Everts, Don. InterVarsity, 2005. 175p. $16.00, Hardcover. ISBN 0830832874. 232.9 Bible. N.T.—Gospels—Criticism, interpretation, etc. Incarnation

Don Everts is involved in a deep love affair. And he takes an unusual approach to telling about the object of his undying love—Jesus. Many times over the years he had read the Gospel stories in his Bible—one that has the sayings of Jesus printed in red. He had never given much thought to the verses printed in black. “Blue-collar” verses, he calls them—forgotten passages. Everts began to realize these black verses were full of details that provide powerful messages about Jesus: who he was; how he lived; how he reacted to people and especially how people reacted to him—attributes Jesus projected during his life on earth, as God in the flesh. The author highlights these verses and shows how they can help rivet our attention squarely on Jesus, where it belongs.

Everts prays that looking at these verses will be as surprising and refreshing for us as it has been for him. After reading his book, I can testify that his prayer has been answered. Now in his early thirties, Everts has long been involved in youth ministry and is a campus ministry leader with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. He writes much the way I believe he probably speaks—with a personal, conversational style that is infectious and easily engages the reader.

Notes, questions and applications are included with each chapter. An excellent resource for Christian libraries and for youth ministry and adult groups.
