The Creed in the Catechism: The Life of God for Us - Duffy, Eamon. Continuum, 2005. 115p. $15.95, paperback. ISBN-10: 0-8601-2398-7. ISBN-13: 978-0-8601-2398-9. 238’.2 Catholic Church—Catechisms—History and criticism. Apostles’Creed.
The Apostles’ Creed is recited as a fundamental statement of belief at every Roman Catholic Mass and during worship services in other Christian traditions as well. Eamon Duffy, a professor at the University of Cambridge and president of Magdalene College in England, explores the Apostles’ Creed as presented in the catechism of Catholics.
Duffy explains the creed’s purpose and place in the catechism. He also addresses the tribulations Catholics have undergone
in connection with the creed. He examines its words and what they mean to the faithful. He also points out, significantly, what the creed does not say. Great emphasis is placed on the importance of reading the catechism with scripture.
This book is excellent reading for priests, catechists, teachers, and anyone interested in Roman Catholicism. Duffy is also the author of Faith of our Fathers and Walking to Emmaus (both also published by Continuum, 2006) and The Stripping of the
Altars (Yale University Press, 1992 and 2005).
